A.J. Powers has finished the cover for Sunlost: Underworld War.

It… is… amazing! There are no other words to describe it.

A.J. is a fantastic artist and writer. Be sure to follow him on Twitter (@aj_powers). He did the cover art for Steve Umstead‘s Gabriel series which are great sci-fi books, by the way.

I’ve had a lot of fun working with A.J. on a new project that I desperately wish I could talk about, but will have to leave at a mere, frustrating tease. When he did the cover for Sunlost, I gave him pretty strict guidelines as to what I wanted and how I wanted it.

This time around, we batted some ideas back and forth, and tried a few. In the end, we both concluded that a bleaker, minimalist theme would best capture the tone of Underworld War.

After that, I gave no direction to him, whatsoever, leaving the whole thing up to his keen eye for detail and composition, trusting in his imaginative prowess. Last night, he began to send images my way, and then a few hours later, he had the final result.

UW_Cover_2It’s punchy and gritty; it’s unnerving; it’s simple and simply brutal; it’s quiet and dark and downright savage. It’s a world war… twenty miles underground…
